The attacks on September 11, 2001, changed the face of the planet forever. A change greater than any single event since World War II. The images of the two smoking World Trade Center Towers in New York City, billowing thick, black smoke before their collapse, will be forever seared in memories around the globe.
Brave Heroes
Before the collapse of the towers, brave first responders from all over the city were attempting to rescue Americans and others trapped in the doomed buildings. The brave men of the New York Fire Department Ladder 3 were part of the futile rescue efforts. Their heroism, bravery, and selflessness, in blatant defiance of an order to retreat from the smoking Twin Towers, cost them their lives as they attempted to rescue trapped victims.

“I’m on the 35th floor, okay, okay?
Just relay to the command post we’re trying to get up.
There’s numerous civilians at all stairwells, numerous burn injuries are coming down.
I’m trying to send them down first.
Apparently, it’s above the 75th floor.
I don’t know if they got there yet. Okay.
Three Truck and we are still heading up.
Okay? Thank you.”

“Command Post to Ladder 3, get out of the building!”
Captain Paddy Brown / Ladder 3:
“This is the officer of Ladder Co. 3. I refuse the order!
I am on the 44th floor and we have too many burned people with me.
I'm not leaving them!”
