Some men are built for the moment. Others become the moment. On March 4, 2002, atop a wind-swept mountain in Afghanistan known as Takur Ghar, Technical Sergeant John Chapman became both.

When his team was ambushed during Operation Anaconda, John Chapman was critically wounded in the initial assault. What followed was an act of pure, unmatched courage. Alone, bleeding, and outgunned, he rose—again and again—to fight off an overwhelming enemy force in order to protect his brothers. He engaged in hand-to-hand combat. He defended a mountaintop with nothing but grit and fury. He kept fighting—for over an hour after being presumed dead.
